CADD Benchmark Tests

Benchmarks provide objective numbers to compare various machines or the effectiveness of various "fixes."

CADD Benchmarks test CPU, RAM, and Video Card to provide graphics performance results specific to the type of work that strains our computers the most.

I (jeff) cannot find a MicroStation v8-specific benchmark test, although tests for MicroStation/J and MicroStation XM are available.

ACAD 2007 Benchmark Test

AutoCAD 2007 has a benchmark test in its program folder, gstest.arx.

From within Land Desktop 2007, hit Tools>Load Applications

You should be in the c:/program files/autodesk land desktop 2007 folder (or something similar, depending on your installation).

Grab gstest.arx.

Once loaded it is launched by keying in "GSTESTBENCHMARK".  It provides the following results:

Wireframe : 1030.020296 ms
Wireframe : 176.695547 fps
Hidden Line : 1066.759043 ms
Hidden Line : 170.610225 fps
Flat Shaded : 1122.340968 ms
Flat Shaded : 162.161059 fps
Gouraud Shaded : 1090.759859 ms
Gouraud Shaded : 166.856159 fps

(As a reference this is for  a new T7300@2.00 GHz 2GB CPU with 2GB ram and a Quadro NVS 135M (256MB) Graphics card).

Please paste your results in:  bm_acad2007.xls

Custom Benchmarks

We can time how long it takes to run a time-consuming task and get objective numbers useful for comparison.

For example, the 805 existing .dtm is very large 88MB.  Loading it takes time and displaying the features takes time.  By comparing different machines and different setups we can get hard (though relative) numbers.  We can compare the effects of different amounts of RAM, local files vs. network files, different CPU's, etc.

Feel free to add your results to file:///L:/USTN/MSv8_config_users/_gen_roadway/hw_tests.xls
