Multimedia Players

You must have a media player such as Windows Media Player or Camtasia Media Player.

Camtasia Player

These AVI's were produced via Camtasia Recorder; playback is particularly well-suited for the free Camtasia Player. Full information, system requirements, and a download link can be found at the official Camtasia Player webpage: http://www.techsmith.com/products/studio/player.asp

Other Media Players (including Windows Media Player)

Generic Multimedia players, such as Windows Media Player, may or may not play the video file properly, depending on version and system setup. In order to run these AVI's, the Techsmith Screen Capture Codec must be downloaded and installed on your machine.

Go to http://www.techsmith.com/products/studio/codecdownload.asp

1. Click on "Download TSCC Codec".
2. Save the file, TSCC.exe to the hard drive.
3. After downloaded, double-click on the TSCC.exe file.
4. Hit the Install button.

Your Media Player should now properly run the Screencams. (note: the screencams were recorded at approximately 1024 x 768 (XGA) resolution and are best viewed near that resolution (this is done automatically with the Camtasia Player)).

Playback Size

If you are using Windows Media Player or other "adjustable size" player, you may have to adjust the viewer size to maximize clarity. The original screen capture area is approximately XGA (1024 x 768). Camtasia Player automatically plays back at the original capture size for maximum clarity.

Troubleshooting

No Picture or File Will Not Play

All media players do not necessarily play all types of video files. They often require compression/decompression files (codecs) for specific formats. Some players will automatically search the web for needed codecs. Others require a manual update or version upgrade to play the avi's. The Camtasia Media Player page has a link for a free download and some troubleshooting explanations.

Clicking on a Link launches the wrong application

The extension of a file is linked to an application via the Windows Explorer Tools>Folder Options>File Type form. If the wrong application is launched when clicking an .avi link:

1. In the Windows Explorer or My Computer, go to an avi file and right-click.

2. Select Open With...

3. You will get the form to the right.

4. Select the Viewer you wish to use. You may need to use the Browse button to find the applciation.

5. Toggle ON the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file.

6. Hit OK.

This should cause clicking on an avi link to launch your selected viewer.
