Old vs. New

Overall Philosophy of Old vs. New:  if it takes me an hour to fix something in v7 and an hour and half to set up a fix in v8, I will put the time into v8.  My plan is to not to put effort into something that will die.

Software Rollout Plan and Schedule

A note to users:  I have no mandate (51% is not a mandate) nor have I interest in dictating a solution.  Experience has proven that your input, as the primary users, is absolutely critical in the success of whatever we do.  If you have concerns, please let me know.  I am committed to addressing your needs.

There are a lot of setting yet to be cleaned up.  Pen tables from Caltrans are still v7 and do not work well yet with v8 files.

Overall Goals:

• Move forward, minimize disruption
• Incrementally Uplift
• Create a culture that expects improvement and regularly achieves it
• Focus on Transportation Group first.
• Provide Configurations for MicroStation and InRoads that are Sensible, Defensible, Extensible and easily manageable.

Method:

• Evaluate current configuration and customizations.
• Find out user's level of expertise and any customizations.
• Anticipated Users' Issues and have training available and in-place.

Intermediate Plan Goals

• Make the latest non-XM version of MicroStation the standard for production.
• Operate by default in v7 (MicroStation/J) mode except for those projects approved for v8.
• Provide Documentation/Training for new MicroStation impacts (deltas).
• If anyone will be working in v8 mode, set up configuration to conform to new client standards.
• Get Caltrans Standards for v8-Imperial (in particular: levels, textstyles, etc).
• Explore a "universal" CAD level standard for all departments and offices.  Determine if an "intra-client translator" makes it feasible.
• Provide Documentation/Training for new InRoads impacts (deltas).
• Provide Documentation/Training for InRoads Typical Workflow Best Practices.

Schedule

I hope to have an initial MicroStation/InRoads CalTrans v8 environment  ready Tuesday, Sept. 3.
