InRoads Brown Bag, November 26

Dennis's Van Buren Interpretive Dance has been rescheduled for the Holiday Party.

Prior to the Superelevation "demo" we'll do the "discrete" stuff (stuff that is short and easily put out the way).  The Superelevation stuff may meander into some strange and esoteric tangents (haha! (highway pun!).  No use forcing everyone to stay for that.

Preference Management

In order for InRoads Preferences to be well managed (minimizing wasted effort) the process needs to be easy and well-coordinated throughout the team.  There are a number of tasks that have to be simple, easy and reliable:

  1. The user must be able to easily segregate his "good mutations."
  2. Users must be able to upgrade to the latest standards without losing his or her "good mutations."
  3. Everyone must understand the simple processes to share corrections and updates to the standards and put their good mutations into the continually-updated standards file.

Current Status (11/26/07)

I've finally figured out the XSL/T to segregate the user changes easily and reliably.

I should be able to build and deliver an end-user front-end (Windows program) to "wrap" the above process in a couple of hours of programming.

I still have to build the "stash merger" to allow users to put their personal and project customizations into the latest standards file.  I think I'm over the hump on the XSL/T, the bulk of the time will be building the front-end as there is some logic options (specifically: ensuring well-formedness; preventing unwanted clobbering and providing options on the overwrites...).

I should be able to incorporate previous updates from the group very soon.

"Steering Committees"

Let's set up regular "Interest Group" meetings (no fluff, all buff: no more than 15 minutes a pop):

  • MicroStation Standards
  • Levels
    • Designing the Enhanced Productivity Superset (beyond CalTrans 63)
    • Managing the Superset
      • A second .dgnlib for the extra level attributes
    • Conversion Procedures
  • Plotting
    • making sure plotting works (and is managed) for
      • Client Deliverables
      • Our Enhanced Productivity Superset
  • InRoads Standards
  • Engineering Improvement/Tools/QC
  • What else?

Identify "content experts" and stakeholders.
